The Polish Community in Windsor 2008 - 2013
One Century of the Polish Community in Windsor in 2008
In 2008, the Windsor Polonia celebrated its first century during the Fourth Polish Week in Windsor. Numerous
articles were released in the Canadian, Polonia and Polish media. The book, “One Century of the Polish
Community in Windsor, 1908-2008”, by Agata Rajski, was published. A DVD with the same title was shown.
Altogether, 81 Centennial Gold Medals of the Polish Community in Windsor were awarded to the most
meritorious, active individuals and to exceptional persons (1, 2).
This year is the 105th anniversary of Polonia,
an appropriate time to draw attention to several facts
about the past five years of the Polish Community. As
in the past, the mainstay of our community is the Holy
Trinity Parish, with its church renovated several years
ago, around which Polonia life has taken place since
1918.
As well, from 1935, the cultural life of Polonia is
concentrated in the Dom Polski, which was recently
refurbished
For many years, the chief sponsor of Polonia activities in Windsor is the Polonia Centre (Windsor), Inc. Each
year, it allocates significant amounts of money for student grants and donations to organizations. It is the main
sponsor of Polish Week in Windsor 2013.
The 95th Anniversary of Poland Regaining Independence
This year marks the 95th anniversary of the regaining of independence by Poland, after 123 years of
occupation by invaders. Canada played an important role in this event. A recruitment and training camp for the Polish Army in North America was located at Niagara-on-the-Lake. Thus, on friendly Canadian soil, the 22,000-strong “Haller’s Blue Army” arose to help in the liberation of the Homeland. These were soldiers, who fought for a Homeland that they had never seen before.
2008, a Year of Important Events for Polonia
The year 2008 was also one of substantial
events for the Canadian Polonia, including the waiving of
visas and signed agreements that were social as well as
about the exchange of young people. There was a visit to
Poland by the Prime Minister of Canada, S. Harper, and a
return visit to Canada by D. Tusk in 2012. That same
year, the Canadian Prime Minister met with Polonia to
mark three events: the 150th anniversary of Kashubes
settling in Canada, the 75th anniversary of the Polish
Canadian Congress, and our 100th anniversary of the
Polish community in Windsor.
Meeting with the First Lady, M. Kaczyńska
It is worth noting that in 2009, at the
Consulate General in Toronto, there was an interesting
meeting of representatives of our Polonia with Ms.
Maria Kaczyńska, the wife of the President of Poland.
This was an occasion for delivering information on the
activities of the Polish community in Windsor.
The Quo Vadis Conference
One of the most interesting events involving
the younger generation in Windsor took
place in 2010. It was the Polish-North
American Quo Vadis Conference, with the
participation of B. Borusewicz, Speaker of
the Polish Senate, with his delegation; J.
Kenney, the Minister of Citizenship,
Immigration and Multiculturalism; and K.
Kosiniak-Kamysz, the Polish Ambassador.
The collaboration with the young people
gave them an interest in community work.
They formed their own student
organization. There is a hope that the next
generation will continue the legacy of their
predecessors.
The Twin Cities of Lublin and Windsor
This year, the Polish community in Windsor celebrates its 105th
anniversary, presenting the accomplishments of Polonia; Polish
culture, history, and traditions; and the growing contacts in
commerce and culture between the old and new home countries,
in particular with the twin city of Lublin.
To mark the 100th anniversary of Polonia in Windsor, Lublin
presented a replica of its goat fountain in bronze, an enduring
ambassador of Lublin in our city (9).
In 2010, a Windsor delegation participated in a conference in
Lublin to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Lublin-Windsor
twinning agreement (10).
It yielded a publication, documenting the collaboration, as well as
an interest in continuing the joint work. We are glad that a
representative of Lublin will be present during the Fifth Polish
Week in Windsor.
Pope John Paul II Day in Canada
On May 30, 2013 the Ontario Parliament proclaimed April 2 as
Pope John Paul II Day; the Federal Parliament passed its third reading of a bill regarding the day. It is anticipated
that, shortly after confirmation by the Canadian Senate, this will be an official day across Canada. This is a
great honour for our eminent Polish Pope, for Poland and for Polonia.
Anniversary Exhibitions
At the previous Polish Week in Windsor, we displayed
“The Odyssey of the Wawel Treasures, 1939-1961”. The
exhibition will be shown again in a modified version.
Two years ago, an exposition on M. Skłodowska-Curie
was presented. This year, we are celebrating the 200th
anniversary of the birth of Sir C.S. Gzowski, the most
distinguished Canadian of Polish origin. His
accomplishments will be on display at a number of
locations during Polish Week in Windsor. It is
interesting that all of these exhibitions originated in
Windsor and will serve as promotional materials for the
entire Polish community of Canada (12)
The International Children’s Games
One of the biggest events in Windsor in recent years was
the International Children’s Games, in August of this
year. The participants were from 81 cities in 31
countries and included a Polish group of almost 20
people from Płock. They won 7 medals and took a
commendable tenth place. Our local sports people
organized a meeting for the Polish guests with Polonia in
the Dom Polski (13). It is good that Poland can be in
Windsor and through the media also in all of Canada.

In conclusion, taking advantage of the occasion, we offer our sincere thanks to the representatives of Polonia
organizations, volunteers, organizers of events, performers, and our never-failing sponsors. Thanks to them, we can promote our Polish roots and the legacy of the land, from which we come, from Poland.
Jerry (Jerzy) Barycki, Chair, Organizing Committee, Polish Week in Windsor
Windsor, October 1, 2013 Translated by Frank Simpson.
LUBLIN AND LUBLIN VOIVODESHIP, 2010
As a doctoral candidate at the Jagiellonian University of Kraków in the 1960s, I had traveled
widely in the Polish Western Carpathian Mountains and the Bieszczady Mountains. Recreational
and eventually family-related travel then and in later years took me to other parts of Poland.
However, I saw Lublin for the first time only in June, 2010, as a member of a delegation from
Windsor’s International Relations Committee.
The delegation was Drew Dilkens, Jerry Barycki and me. We went to Lublin from June 4-8, 2010,
to participate in celebrations of the first decade of the twinning agreement between Lublin and
Windsor. I travelled to Warszawa with Jerry Barycki, arriving in the morning of Friday, June 4.
We were driven from the airport in a car from the City Council of Lublin and arrived in our twin
city in the early afternoon. We checked into the IBB Grand Hotel Lublinianka and after lunch,
spent the rest of the afternoon sightseeing. Drew Dilkens arrived in the evening.
We began Saturday with a walking tour of the beautiful Old City of Lublin (1), assisted by an
English-speaking guide. In the afternoon, we went to Lublin City Hall for a discussion of the
Lublin application for recognition by the European Union as a “European Centre of Culture” in
2016. In the evening, we joined in the celebration of a major event, Lublin’s Night of Culture (2).
We walked along streets, filled with people, enjoying theatre performances, movies, and open-air
concerts, all free of charge. The crowds were mainly made up of young people, clearly having a
good time and openly eager to share their glad feelings.
On Sunday, we visited Majdanek, the German Nazi Concentration Camp, which witnessed
unspeakable atrocities during World War 2. Our visit was covered by Telewizja Polska (TVP).
Afterwards, as a total contrast, we went by car to Kozłówka, and toured the historic palace of the
Zamoyski family and its beautiful grounds. Next, we visited the picturesque town of Kazimierz
Dolny, on the right bank of the Vistula River. We later went to see flood-relief efforts in another
part of the voivodeship, where the Vistula had overflowed its banks over a wide area(3).

It was organized by the Catholic University of Lublin
(KUL) and the City of Lublin. Each member of the Windsor delegation made a contribution to the
conference (4). In the afternoon, we first visited the City Hall as the guests of the Mayor, Dr. Adam
Wasilewski. Afterwards, we went to KUL and met with Fr. Prof. Sławomir Nowosad, Senior Vice
President, and then continued on to the Medical University of Lublin for a meeting with Prof. Adam
Główniak, Senior Vice President. The visit by the Windsor group came to its conclusion with an
official dinner at the Grand Hotel Lublinianka.
We said farewell to Lublin early Tuesday morning and travelled by car to Warszawa, arriving at the
Hotel Mercure in the early afternoon. We visited the Senate of the Republic of Poland as guests of
Senator Łukasz Abgarowicz (5). We next went to the Canadian Embassy and met with H.E. Dan
Costello, Ambassador to Poland. The afternoon ended with a visit to the Polish Parliament and a
meeting with Representative Mr. Andrzej Ćwierz. The following day, we went our separate ways.
I travelled by train to the western border of Poland, for a brief visit with family members in Zielona
Góra, and later to Kraków to spend some time with some of my friends from the 1960s.
My first visit to Lublin was filled with strongly positive impressions. I felt that our visit had
contributed to the strengthening of the mutual understanding between Windsor and Lublin. The
Windsor delegation had made significant contributions to a conference that was meaningful for
future relations between the twin cities. We had renewed old friendships in Lublin and also created
some new ones for the City of Windsor. On our return to Windsor, we followed up on our visit to
the flooded parts of the Lublin voivodeship with a fund-raising campaign to assist those, whose
lives had been disrupted.

The W. Reymont Foundation promotes the culture and
education among the Polish population in Canada. It serves
the entire Polonia. From the dawn of its activities, the most
important goal of the Foundation was, and still is,
preservation of Polish Culture in Canada; preservation of
our national heritage among the Polonia, as well as
participation in the development of Canadian culture.
The Foundation realizes the difficulties that young people face in a
multicultural society. Therefore, in order to arouse in them, growing and being
educated here, a feeling of pride in their Polish background, the Foundation
grants scholarships to students of Polish origin, organizes literary contests,
gives financial help to non-profit organizations, Polonia groups, schools, also
sponsors many functions whose aim is to preserve and spread Polish culture
and tradition in Canada.
The W. Reymont Foundation has attracted many dedicated people whose
desire to propagate Polish culture in the Canadian multicultural society, have
displayed a noble, sincere and generous heart.
Just like every Polonia organization, The W. Reymont Foundation is today
in need of people who are willing to give their time and energy. Hence, we
are appealing to all who have interest in the Polish youth of Canada to help
them learn and maintain the culture and heritage of their ancestors. In order
to continue the work of the Foundation we need the support of willing
volunteers.
The future of the Polish culture in Canada is dependent
on the solidarity of the Polonia.
You can demonstrate this solidarity by supporting our activities
by any of the following means:
Form Scholarship Funds · Bequest in wills · Donations
Membership and active support in the Foundation
All donations to the Foundation qualify as charitable donations.
If you have any questions
or need more information please contact us.
